What a gap row looks like

One row per store. Real stores, real counts.

Four of the 31 stores that carry Kimes Ranch and not Hooey, from the 8 October crawl. The first row is shown complete; the other three show where a paid report fills in.

Method and trust

How we read it

  • One request per second per store. A run is one request per 250 products plus robots.txt: about 7 requests per store.
  • robots.txt honoured on every run. A store that disallows its catalogue path is skipped.
  • Every request is signed under the Web Bot Auth draft standard (IETF), so a store can verify who is reading.
  • No logins. No customer data, orders, carts or accounts, ever.
  • No owner or staff names. Contacts are the business mailbox and phone a store prints itself.
  • If the only address a store publishes is a personal-style mailbox, it is still the address the store chose to publish. We add nothing to it and never look up individuals.
  • Any store or brand can opt out by email, no reason needed. We stop reading the store at the next run and remove it from every report issued after the request, within two business days. Details at doorcount.co/data.
  • Operated from Los Angeles, California.

Founder note

From the founder

I run three western denim brands. The question that decided every wholesale season was the same: which stores already carry the brands we sit next to, and which of those have not heard from us. Answering it by hand meant opening store websites one at a time. Doorcount is the tool I built to answer it for my own outreach. The data is the same for every brand, so it is sold to every brand.

Questions

Five things brands ask first

Where does the data come from?

From the product catalogue each store publishes on its own website to every visitor: product titles, the brand name on each product, product type, and the date each product was listed. We do not read anything behind a login, and we hold no customer data. The full method, including our crawler's name and signing key, is at doorcount.co/data.

Is this legal, and is it polite?

We read only what is already public, at one request per second, honouring each store's robots.txt. Every request is signed under the Web Bot Auth draft standard (IETF), so a store can see exactly who is reading and verify it. Any store or brand can opt out by email, no reason needed. We stop reading the store at the next run and remove it from every report issued after the request, within two business days. That is the standard we would want applied to our own stores.

Will stores know I bought a report?

No. We do not tell stores which brands buy reports, and we do not contact stores on your behalf unless you ask us to. A store can see that Doorcount read its public catalogue, because our crawler identifies itself on every request. What you do with the list is your outreach, through the business contacts the store already publishes.

What if my brand's count is wrong?

Email us. Stores spell brand names differently, and a variant we have not matched to you lowers your count. We check the stores by hand, fold the variant in, and re-issue your door count and any report that depended on it at no charge. A store that buys from you but has not listed you online yet will show as a gap; send us your account list and we exclude it. Your free door count is also the quickest way to check our number before you buy anything.

What is the refund policy?

Ask for your free door count first; it tells you the exact number of rows a Gap Report will have before you pay. If a paid report does not match the count you were quoted, arrives later than 24 hours after payment, or a row turns out not to carry the competitor on the date of the crawl, email within 14 days and we refund the report in full. Watch can be cancelled by email in any month.
